A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
