A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
